A Unique Creative Writing Group...

Sutton Scarsdale visit

Derbyshire Scribes are delighted to announce the launch of this website and associated forum.  We are now well into our second year of activities and going from strength to strength.

We are based in the historic town of Bolsover where we meet once a month close to the famous castle. Membership is increasing steadily and we hope this will continue as new Scribes who cannot physically attend our get-togethers keep in touch online via our forum.

Derbyshire Scribes are pleased to be different! Members’ backgrounds are wide and varied and our meetings are informal yet constructive. There is no hierarchy - no teachers, just good listeners who make honest observations. The emphasis is on supporting each other with open discussions. Ideas for writing are taken from local resources and individual skills wherever possible. We hire professional guides, meet with other groups for talks and, by discovering the passions that inspire them, we are able to feed our own creativity. For instance, last August we were regaled with murderous tales in Chesterfield, and in July we had visited the ghostly ruins of Sutton Scarsdale Hall. In October publisher Peter Birchenall discussed research methods for his latest book, and we literally rang in the New Year at Bolsover Parish Church during a tour of the belfry.

The Scribes are especially keen to nurture individual skills and talents. Every member is encouraged to share their interests and hobbies enabling us to build a collective data-base of ideas and resources that we can draw upon. All our members have love of literature and a belief in the sharing of ideas. We recognize that objective, thoughtful critiques are essential if our writing skills are to improve and we accept that a critique is not a personal attack but a process that brings about wider understanding of writing techniques.

Derbyshire Scribes embrace and encourage any and all forms of writing, and all genres. It’s the writing that’s important.

Our meetings are usually informal and lively with no airs, graces or prima donnas. They usually include a literary quiz with a magnificent floating trophy – those that tried throwing it into the cut will testify to that.

Where to next?

There is nothing flash or fancy about this site, it's all about the content, not snazzy production. It's meant to be informative rather than a substitute for solitaire - but there is a link to a game somewhere if you're really bored.

Just follow the links on the left but don't forget to let us know what you think. Oh yes, if you're not already a Scribe, think about joining us.
